Not Enough Time
BARBARA BENTREE – DIRECTOR / PRODUCER
“DAVE GRUSIN: NOT ENOUGH TIME”
“Dave Grusin: Not Enough Time” is Director Barbara Bentree’s first Feature Film.
Audiences may wonder how she managed to gather an Academy Award-winning production team for her first big documentary. Barbara was relentless in seeking the best talent possible for her movie about Dave Grusin. In her mind, the quality of film had to reflect the extraordinary beauty of Dave Grusin’s music. Her stellar production team members include Kate Amend (editor), Autumn Eakin (director of photography) Chris Jenkins (music mixer), Jeremy Deneau (asst. editor) and DXD, the LA Post Production team that has delivered other Oscar-winning docs.
In addition to being an Award-winning Film Director, Barbara is a multiple award- winning Vocalist / Musician. She started filmmaking by creating educational films, music videos, and documentary shorts before tackling her film about Dave Grusin. One of her most fascinating music credits was being part of the production team of The Mickey Mouse Club TV show where she auditioned and cast Ryan Gosling, Justin Timberlake, Keri Russell, Christina Aquilera and Britney Spears in the show to name just a few.
Bentree brings her classical music training and jazz improvisation skills to her film directing. She was drawn to filmmaking because Barbara feels film is very musical…it’s all about rhythm, dynamics, tempo, juxtaposition, teamwork, and creative storytelling. Barbara also functions as the music supervisor because she believes that music is so important to the story. She was uncompromising in her choices of music and live concert footage, no matter how hard the challenge.
Having a 35 year history with Dave Grusin, Barbara feels that “Dave Grusin: Not Enough Time” is the film she was destined to make. This film is not only a tribute to the extraordinary life and career of Mr. Grusin, it also documents the “Golden Age” of television and film music. The movie also examines the heady time when Grusin’s own record label (GRP Records) was at the forefront of transforming the music industry from analog to digital. The music industry has never been the same.
In all of Barbara Bentree’s film work there is the predominance of nature. Having grown up in rural Minnesota, she sees the world through the lens of the natural world no matter what the subject. And possibly most important, Bentree is committed to telling stories that are positive and uplifting. “I also work to use as many women in my productions as possible because I absolutely know that women bring a different sensibility and perspective to filmmaking.” says Bentree. “I am a filmmaker that wants to bring light and inspiration to the world, no matter what the subject matter. In our preview screenings of the film about Dave Grusin, we have seen audience members who were “in tears” at the end of the film because they feel so much joy. That has been incredibly gratifying! Music brings people together and we are all searching for meaningful ways to connect to each other right now.”
